The India Bullion & Jewellers Association (IBJA) reports an unusually large influx of old silver in the market around 100 tonnes in a single week, an amount that would normally take several months to appear. Typically, the Indian market sees only 10-15 tonnes of old silver in a full month, making this sudden surge highly unexpected.
The world’s above-ground gold stock totals about 216,265 tonnes, mostly in jewelry, while below-ground reserves are estimated at 132,110 tonnes as of the end of 2024. Gold prices are currently around 40% higher than their inflation adjusted peak in 1980. Although prices have dropped 54% from the October 20 high of USD 4,380, gold remains historically strong, serving as a trusted store of value.
According to an SBI Research report released on Wednesday, India’s total consumer demand for gold rose to 802.8 tonnes in 2024, accounting for 26% of global demand. This places India as the world’s second-largest gold consumer, just behind China, which recorded a demand of 815.4 tonnes.
