Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff stated that AI-powered coding agents boosted engineering productivity so significantly that the company hired no new engineers in fiscal year 2026, while also cutting customer service roles.
Salesforce recently laid off fewer than 1,000 employees at the start of February 2026, targeting departments including marketing, product management, data analytics, and the Agentforce AI product team, according to reports citing Business Insider and LinkedIn activity.
Salesforce leaders, including SVP Sanjna Parulekar, have admitted that confidence in large language models has dropped sharply over the past year due to issues like failing on complex instructions, AI “drift,” and inconsistent task execution, such as missing customer surveys.

Salesforce is reducing its customer support team from 9,000 to 5,000 employees, with 51 to 100 expected to leave in Washington state on November 3.
